When I lost my husband of twenty-seven years to a rare and aggressive cancer—just after an abrupt retirement from a long career and the arrival of an empty nest—I witnessed every pillar of my carefully structured life crumble.
Suddenly, a widow, I made an extraordinary decision: I dismantled the hollowed-out museum of our home, packed my bags, and drove from New Mexico to the California coast to build a new life, to grieve while still living, and to find light in the darkest season.
My memoir is for anyone who has ever stood in the wreckage of a lost dream and faced the question: How do we discover our true selves when every place, every role, and every certainty that defines us undergoes transformation?
It delves into the experience of losing the life we envisioned and the journey of learning how to build a new one that still allows us to feel a sense of belonging.
